As part of the collaboration, Myriad and the network will work together to perform hereditary cancer research through the Genetic Risk Evaluation and Testing (GREAT) program within network-affiliated practices. Under this program, the two organizations will collaborate to create a database that links patient outcomes with genetic test results. RECOGNITIONS
•Dr. Myron Wentz, founder of USANA Health Sciences, has been recognized with theLifetime Achievement AwardbyChildren’s Hunger Fundfor his philanthropic efforts. The award honors individuals who, through their efforts and generosity, empower the nonprofit organization to deliver hope to suffering children around the globe. For the past 15 years, Wentz has funded many projects, including Cargo of Hope (11.7 million meals provided), Beds for Ukraine Orphans (2,400 beds built and outfitted), Wentz Medical Centers in Uganda, Cambodia and Malawi (with two more in development) and has championed the donation of more than $21.3 million in cash and nutritional supplements through USANA and its charitable branch, the USANA True Health Foundation. The award was presented during the Children’s Hunger Fund 25th anniversary celebration at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
• TheGovernor’s Office of Economic Development(GOED) has received aGold Excellence in Economic Development Awardfor its 2016 project in the category of New Media from theInternational Economic Development Council(IEDC). The honor was presented at an awards ceremony during the IEDC Annual Conference in September in Cleveland. The Utah Economic Development Map (locate.utah.gov) is an interactive mapping tool that allows users to virtually explore Utah’s business-grade broadband infrastructure, extrapolate workforce data for any location, easily identify public utility providers and locate nearby transportation and lifestyle features that drive economic development in the state. Locate.utah.gov was developed by theUtah Broadband Outreach Centerin GOED, in partnership with the state’sAutomated Geographic Reference Center(AGRC) and theEconomic Development Corporation of Utah.
•AARP Utahrecently recognized more than a dozen volunteers in itsAndrus AwardandOutstanding Volunteerrecognitions. Salt Lake County Rides for Wellness volunteerPaul Kikuchireceived theAndrus Award for Community Service. Retired and Senior Volunteer Program volunteerSanford Rosenthalreceived theAARP Utah Lifetime Achievement Awardfor his service to veterans. •Qualtrics, a Provo-based customer experience software company, was recently ranked as the top survey software onG2 Crowd’s fall2016 Survey Software Grid. The grid rates products based on customer satisfaction and market presence. Also,Ryan Smith, chief executive officer, was ranked 12th on the list of the “Fortune 2016 40 Under 40,”Fortune’s annual ranking of the most influential young people in business.
RETAIL
• University Place, Orem, recently had a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of The Orchard, an outdoor community gathering space, as well as the Kid’s Place, an indoor/outdoor children’s play area. The Orchard is located in the heart of University Place (formerly University Mall) and features open green grass, a show fountain choreographed to water and lights that will play throughout the day, three shaded pavilions with cushioned lounge-style furniture, and covered seating areas. Connected to the Orchard is the outdoor Kid’s Place play area. It features design elements that reflect the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains — including two photographic murals by local photographers Eric Reeder and Willie Holdman — and the play areas include wooden tree houses, a log climbing structure, monkey bars in the trees, a seesaw, a climbing wall, interactive water fountains and more.Woodbury Corp.owns and is developing the University Place revitalization project.
RURAL UTAH
• Several aerospacecompanies and state and local leaders last week traveled throughout rural Utah totour local businesses, present career options to high school students, and host community events. The group visited Emery, Carbon, Duchesne and Uintah counties. TheAerospace States Association Utah Chapter, in partnership with theGovernor’s Office of Economic Development(GOED), is exploring opportunities to bring the aerospace industry into local communities. Utah’s aerospace industry accounts for nearly 1,000 companies and more than 30,000 jobs in the state. Tour participants includedLockheed Martin,L-3 Communications Systems-West,Orbital ATK,Hill Air Force Base,Lt. Gov. Spencer J. Cox,GOED executive director Val Haleand local county officials.
SCHOLARSHIPS
•Western Governors UniversityandReal Salt Laketeamed up to grant scholarships worth a year’s tuition to four local students:Cassandra Graham,Leslie Briggs,Jean-Philippe DesiusandShana Butler. They were awarded the scholarships during halftime of the RSL-Houston Dynamo match at Rio Tinto Stadium. Each of the winners are currently enrolled at WGU and submitted an official entry form earlier in the year. Graham is earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing, Briggs is working toward her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, Desius is finishing his bachelor’s degree in information technology, and Butler is completing her master’s degree in accounting.
•Career Step, Lehi, has teamed up with the nonprofitNational Military Family Associationto award a full tuition scholarship each quarter to a military spouse. The third 2016 recipient isShermaine Sampson-Turntine. She and her husband, a retired Army service member, have recently been displaced by a house fire. With the financial implications of this tragedy, she has been forced to postpone her dream of pursuing a master’s degree in social work. To help fund her long-term educational goals, she has decided to pursue a medical transcription and editing career through Career Step’s training program. Career Step is an online provider of career-focused education and professional training. The association works to strengthen and protect military families.

•Boart Longyear, a Salt Lake City-based provider of drilling services, has announced that the government of Ontario, Canada, has awardedBoart Longyear Canada$1.37 million to support the development of a mineral exploration drilling site and drilling systems technology. Investments by theNorthern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.(NOHFC) in similar projects have the potential to improve safety for drillers, increase efficiency, reduce drilling costs and create jobs once the products are commercialized. The company’s management team selected the Sudbury region for its newest research and development facility. With the support of the NOHFC funding as well as a matching corporate capital investment, Boart Longyear will work at theNorthern Centre for Advanced Technology(NORCAT) to test and develop several proprietary technologies, including driller-deployable geochemical technologies and other new technologies that will increase productivity.
•Gabe Gilliamis openingMiracle Method, a home refinishing company, in Salt Lake City. His wife,Erin Gilliam, works on the corporate team as the corporate marketing manager. They have relocated their entire family from Seattle to Salt Lake City for the business. After serving active duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Gabe Gilliam ran a remodeling and renovation business in Seattle.
TECHNOLOGY/LIFE SCIENCES
•StorageCraft Technology Corp., Draper, has hiredMatthew Crumleyas chief financial officer. Crumley is responsible for StorageCraft’s finance organization, which includes global financial planning, reporting and accounting practices. He is also responsible for the company’s relationships with lending institutions, shareholders and the financial community. Crumley has 19 years of experience in finance, including six years at inContact, including three years as vice president of finance. He also spent five years at Overstock as the director of accounting and SEC reporting and seven years as the manager of business assurance at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Crumley received his Master of Accountancy from Brigham Young University.
